Contest Rules

The LPQue BBQ Championship is being sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) as part of a new format called "The Competitor Series."  Normally the approved fuel choices for a sanctioned contest would be charcoal, wood, and/or wood pellets.  This new series allows for rule changes to be made by the contest organizer.  In the LPQue BBQ Championship, LP gas will be used for the main heat source, but the cooks will be allowed to use charcoal and/or wood for flavor enhancement.

Another significant departure from a normal KCBS sanctioned contest is that the LPQue BBQ Championship allows no garnish or any other foreign material as part of the judged presentation.  Usually green leaf lettuce and parsley is allowed but not required.  However, most successful KCBS contest cooks will spend a great deal of time working on enhancing the appearance of their entry by carefully choosing where they place the garnish.  Appearance of the entry in this contest will still be part of the scoring.  But will relate more to the look of the meat rather than the overall look of the meat enhanced by garnish.

Please review all the information that is presented on the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) website. The world of contest BBQ has grown significantly over the last few years. Strongly consider joining the KCBS.  One of the main benefits of membership is receiving the monthly newspaper called "The Bullsheet" which will be full of contest-related information, including the LPQue.
